Refurb of Stokesley Health Centre

LOCATION: NORTH EAST   |   PROJECT AREA: PROJECT AND PROGRAMME MANAGEMENT   |   PROJECT STATUS: COMPLETED

Stokesley Health Centre, located in a market town a few miles south of Middlesbrough, was long overdue a refurbishment. The outdated facility was struggling to manage an increasing number of patients, and was also in serious need of upgrades to make it more energy efficient and compliant with current healthcare accommodation standards. NHS Property Services asked Durham & Tees Community Ventures to manage the scheme.

The Solution

Having one organisation overseeing the whole project simplified things for NHS Property Services. Durham & Tees Community Ventures (D&TCV) ran the entire refurbishment scheme, initially being appointed to undertake a feasibility study of options for the building and, once the scheme was approved, appointing and managing the design team, overseeing the phasing of the works and managing all stakeholders involved, as well as the £1.9m budget. This gave the NHS team one point of contact for the full process, making communication and responsibilities clear and simple.

Project delivery was complex as the health centre needed to remain open throughout the revamp. D&TCV divided the work into three distinct phases to allow staff to deliver services with the minimum disruption to patients – with staff and patient safety being of the highest importance throughout.

The Result

The result is a modern, contemporary health centre fit for delivering the latest healthcare services.

Internal alternations mean there’s better use of space, improved patient flow, and the interiors have been completely overhauled to be light and uplifting. Patients are given a warm welcome at the new entrance lobby and spacious reception area, and acoustic panelling enhances the feeling of the centre, doubling as artwork to create wall features and a canopy over the reception desk.

A more sustainable building

Importantly, the building’s been made much more sustainable. All building services were renewed, including energy-efficient heating and LED lighting, a new roof, cavity fill insulation and thermally efficient windows cutting down on emissions and costs.

The building is now the home of a range of services, including a GP practice, a variety of acute community services and an ambulance base.

Refurbishing Stokesley Health Centre has brought it into the modern age, safeguarding a range of services for the community and giving a facility fit for the demands of modern healthcare.

"The improvements to the Health Centre are incredible. Feedback from both staff and patients has been nothing but positive, and it was a pleasure to work with such a great team. Many thanks to everybody involved!"
